Sunset Flat

Artistic Luxury

Overview

An Asia-based couple wanted their Vancouver condo with big English Bay and False Creek views to be artistically designed, and feel all at once comfortable and inspiring for resting, working and entertaining.

Thoroughly rethinking the floorplan to maximize the views from the moment of entry, we created a view corridor through the kitchen to the marble Mangiarotti table, Bocci 73 light installation, and out over Granville Island Market.

Throughout we sought a sense of balance—the dramatic visual weight of stone and strong rectilinear forms mix with the lighter elements like swagged coax lighting cables, thin millwork framing, quarter-inch shadow reveals, silk pillows, and brass and copper hardware.

The dramatically veined marble backsplash in the kitchen extends floor to ceiling, behind the tall cabinets on the left and tucks behind the grey wall on the right.

"An elegant pied-à-terre in Vancouver celebrates Italian design from the '60s and '70s."

The white marble Agape Casa dining table creates an intimate spot for tea or working from home. The Collection Particulière banquet allows for quick naps while basking in the sunshine with the best view in the flat.

In the living room, a Jan Kath rug of gradient blues, greens, oranges, and yellows brings the sunset hues inside.

Between the living room and bedroom, a sliding wall optimizes views from the bed, providing a loft-like feel when the clients are home alone and privacy when they host friends.

In the primary ensuite, an Avocatus Granite custom sink delivers dramatic colour, along with playful Bocci 87 lighting and the warmth of a New Format Studio brass mirror and gold Vola faucet. While detailing and finishes elevate the sense of luxury, they also avoid an overly delicate sense of preciousness.

"The result is unexpected yet balanced, minimalist yet warm, sophisticated yet livable."

High traffic corners in the media room were softened with a 4” radius wall corner.

"In this pied-à-terre, art, design and nature converge seamlessly to create a space that reflects the owners' unique style and appreciation for both Italian aesthetics and the natural beauty of the Canadian West Coast."
